Cardiologists conference begins

The annual conference of the Interventional Cardiology Council of Kerala (ICCK) began here on Saturday. Over 150 interventional cardiologists from all over the state attended the meet which showcased the interventional procedures, and the hardware.

The annual cardiology interventional procedural data for Kerala in 2011 showed a 40 per cent increase in primary angioplasty compared to the previous year.

Primary angioplasty refers to the immediate opening of a blocked coronary artery of a patient who has had a heart attack. The procedure is being used in less than 10 per cent of heart attack cases in the state  owing to the cost as well as the availability of cathlab facility with the service of trained interventional cardiologists.

Last year, nearly 5,000 patients received the treatment.

45 case-based procedures were presented on the inaugural day, said Dr Anand Kumar V, organizing secretary of ICCK, 2012.

The annual report was presented by Dr Manu R Varma, secretary of ICCK. Dr Suresh K, president of the ICCK, inaugurated the conference.

The key session was ‘Interventions in the Left Main Coronary Artery Diseases’. “Advances in the hardware and stenting technology now means that more than 50 per cent of these cases can be efficiently cured with angioplasty, thus saving a great deal of patient morbidity,” said Sajy Kuruttukulam, chairman of the scientific committee. 40 more presentations will be made on the different techniques and technologies on Sunday.
