PALAKKAD: C K Rajendran, former MLA and district secretary of the Karshaka Sangham, was chosen as the new CPM district secretary at the end of the three-day party district conference at Vadakkenchery, near here, on Sunday. Rajendran will replace P Unni, who had been holding the post for the past 12 years. Unni was denied the post for the fifth term as the majority of the members of the official faction opposed it. Though the party state committee wished to maintain status quo and continue with Unni, a section of the official group was against him. It is learnt that when a contest became inevitable, Unni decided to opt out of the race. Later, Rajendran was unanimously elected the new secretary. The name of Rajendran was proposed by Unni himself. The members of the committee was reduced to 41 from 43 this time. While five new faces were introduced to the district committee, seven members of the erstwhile committee were axed.
