London: 'Couch Potato' Britons spend an average of nine years of their lives watching television, a new study has found. Researchers say that the time spent in front of the 'idiot-box' is five years more than the combined length the country spends shopping, playing sport and in bed.
Three of those years is astonishingly spent watching repeats or what people consider to be "rubbish" programmes, the Daily Express reported. As many as three-quarters of Brits watch the same festive movies every Christmas.
Their family life now centres around the couch, which has replaced the kitchen as the most popular place for dinner, to avoid missing favourite shows. One in 10 eats every meal in front of the television, with the average Briton having four TV dinners per week.
Women watch more TV than men 25.2 hours per week compared to 22.4 and the over 55s are the most addicted group. The survey of 2,000 adults discovered as the recession bites the country, even lovebirds are spending "date nights" watching TV and movies to save money, the report said. Geordies are the country's biggest TV addicts, researchers for TV and movie streaming service blinkbox.com found.
