New Delhi: The British media that accompanied Theresa May in her first visit to India as the UK prime minister were dismayed by the haze that surrounded India’s national capital.
Members of the delegation told News18 that they were forewarned about Delhi pollution but no one had anticipated that the issue was so grave.
Sam Coates of Times, London, said he hadn’t witnessed anything like this in his lifetime.
“The moment you stepped out of the plane you knew there was a problem. What really shocked me was not the first impression but when I got to the hotel, the haze was inside the lobby. Clearly there is a significant grave problem here if it’s that entrenched. You can't see beyond the pool. You compared it to the great smog in London, I haven't seen anything like this in my lifetime,” he told News18.
Anushka Asthana of The Guardian said she keeps visiting India regularly but never experienced anything like the current levels of pollution. “Someone told us before we came out that maybe you should wear a mask. When you got off the plane you literally felt - can I breathe? It's shocking, I've been posting pictures, and I hope it clears up,” she said.
Like Coates of Times London Jason Farrell of Sky too said he was shocked to see the haze inside the hotel lobby. “When I stepped out I felt as if I had stepped in front of a car exhaust and you can feel it in your throat. The hotel lobby was misty. I haven't seen anything like,” he said
Anushka Asthana of The Guardian summed it all up well: “I hope Theresa May comes next time when it's not as smoggy but I think she will see past this. I don't think we will have any deals till Brexit is done.”
