BHUBANESWAR: Aiming for a better coverage of Kalyan Mandap in the city, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has identified the locations for setting up the new Kalyan Mandap in across the city. The BMC has decided to set up 19 additional Kalyan Mandap in the city as per this year’s budget. “We sat down with the ward map of the entire city and then decided where there is a need for a new Kalyan Mandap,” said BMC city engineer TBK Shroff. The BMC has seven Kalyan Madap that are booked throughout the year. The lack of sufficient Kalyan Mandaps in the city can be a problem for those on a lookout for good wedding venue at a reasonable price. Most of the land identified for the mandap is under the General Administration (GA) department. And two of the identified land fall under the Odisha State Housing Board (OSHB). Few of the major places that were in need of a Kalyan Mandap and have been sanctioned land are Rasulgarh, Lumbini Vihar, Suderpada, BJB Nagar, Patia, Maitri Vihar and Paika Nagar. The files for approval from the GA department have already been forwarded by the BMC. For the two venues that fall under the OSHB, the BMC has to first get approval from OSHB for the mandap’s construction. The seven kalyan mandaps located at Chandrashekharpur, VSS Nagar, Baragada, Shahid Nagar and a few other places. These kalyan mandaps are not enough to meet the requirements, specially during the peak wedding seasons. The citizens were left with no choice but to book the private wedding halls at a much higher price. But with the identification of the land for the mandap, the corporation is now one step closer towards their construction. The BMC also has provisions to upgrade and modernise the existing seven kalyan mandaps. “We have plans to add facilities that will modernise the seven Kalyan Mandap,” added Shroff.
