The Uttar Pradesh unit of BJP on Wednesday demanded a high-level probe into the allegation of a ruling Samajwadi Party legislator, who claimed that corruption was rampant in Ballia district.
"If a SP MLA is levelling corruption charges then it's a serious matter and a high-level inquiry must be conducted," BJP spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak told reporters here.
"SP MLAs are themselves exposing the rising corruption in the state in the Akhilesh Yadav government," Pathak said.
Alleging that corruption was at its peak in the district, ruling SP legislator from Sikandarpur seat of Ballia Mohammad Rizvi said that officers were not paying heed to the party workers.
"The corruption is at its peak in the district. Officers are not paying heed to party workers. While BSP men are getting their works done by paying bribe, SP workers are a neglected lot," Rizvi told reporters in Ballia on Monday.
The MLA had said that such situation would not be tolerated and in July he and his supporters would gherao the Sikandarpur tehsil.
The BJP spokesman alleged that corruption was so rampant in the SP government that no work of the people was being done without paying bribe in government departments.
Pathak claimed that the state government was blaming previous BSP regime to conceal its failures.
The spokesman said that why action was not being taken on inquiries being conducted into the alleged corruption during previous regime.
