BHUBANESWAR: The avian influenza has re-surfaced. This time in Bhubaneswar. The Bhopal-based High Security Animal Diseases Laboratory (HSADL) on Friday confirmed bird flu among the poultry population of Central Poultry Development Organisation (CPDO).The State Government has swung into action and imposed restriction on movement of poultry within 3-km radius of the CPDO, which is located close to Kalinga Stadium along National Highway No.5. As many as 10 rapid response teams have been constituted for surveillance.The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) convened an emergency meeting after the test results reached the State Government and ordered that poultry and poultry product shops in 21 wards, located within the alert zone, will be closed down.The CPDO, at present, has a poultry population of 28,851. For the last three to four days, mortality was recorded in the poultry colonies and samples were sent to HSADL. “The authorities detected death of a dozen birds every day in the last few days when they suspected avian influenza,” Director, Veterinary Services and Animal Husbandry, Benudhar Das said.The Bhopal-based lab sent its reports to the Government on Friday. The Fisheries and Animal Resources Development department held a meeting to chalk out plans. Details of measures taken will be sent to the Ministry of Agriculture on Saturday so that it can issue a central advisory.The bird flu detection prompted the BMC to set up a control room at the office of the Sub-Divisional Veterinary Officer in Sahid Nagar area. The SDVO will be the nodal officer.As a precautionary measure, the BMC formed mobile teams, which will move in the wards and undertake sanitation measures. Poultry firms and shops will be disinfected and slums will be given special attention.Municipal Commissioner Vishal Dev said a base camp will be set up at CPDO under the Director. Bhubaneswar DCP Nitinjit Singh has been instructed to make necessary arrangements for stopping movement of poultry and poultry products within the 3- km radius.Bhubaneswar is the third place in the State where bird flu has been detected after Kerang (Khurda) and Betanati (Mayurbhanj). At Kerang and Betanati, the Government culled over 423,128 poultry birds in January.
