PUDUCHERRY: Former DMK minister Ponmudy was on Wednesday arrested at Villupuram on land grab charges. According to police, land measuring about 1.44 lakh sqft was given to Periyar Transport Corporation in 1992 for construction of staff quarters in which 394 dwelling units were built. However, the remaining land allotted for a children’s park and community hall was ‘auctioned’ to Siga Educational Trust, run by Ponmudy’s family members and others.AIADMK’s trade union wing leader Narayanasamy, also the president of Thanthai Periyar Residential Welfare Association, on Tuesday lodged a complaint of misuse of power and forcible acquisition of land for the trust with R Dinakaran, Superintendent of Police, Villupuram. Following this, police booked cases under IPC Sections 409, 420, 425, 467, 468, 471, 120(b), 352, 50(1) against Ponmudy.High drama prevailed in Villupuram before his arrest with several DMK cadre assembling outside Ponmudy’s house when J Jayaraj, DSP, Land Grab Cell, and G Segar, DSP, Town, went to arrest him. They raised slogans and attempted to prevent his arrest. Ponmudy walked till the main road along with his supporters before he was taken away for an inquiry. While being escorted by police, Ponmudy said he would face the case legally.Ponmudy is the fourth DMK leader to be held on land grab charges after Veerapandi S Arumugam, K N Nehru and NKKP Raja.
