BANGALORE: Governor H R Bhardwaj has decided to order a judicial probe into the happenings in the Bangalore University. Taking a suo motu decision after a series of protests that culminated in an alleged assault on Vice-Chancellor Dr Prabhu Dev, the Governor, as Chancellor of the university, is said to have decided to intervene to “maintain academic decorum and sanctity” and order a probe by a retired High Court judge.Sources close to the Governor told Express that Bhardwaj had asked his office to prepare a note based on two independent and contradictory reports sent by Dev and Registrar (Administration) B C Mylarappa on the recent incidents on the campus. The inquiry is being ordered in a couple of days as per Section 8 of the Karnataka State Universities Act (KSUA). “I don’t want the campus to turn into a controversial ground. I am keen to maintain peace and academic atmosphere there,” the Governor is said to have told his close aides, who are looking into the reports.The university’s main campus Jnanabharathi had been witnessing a series of protests over the last couple of weeks. It all began with some students staging a protest urging the VC to visit the main campus (apparently to listen to their grievances), followed by an attack on Director of Correspondence Course and Distance Education B R Niranjan.The agitations concluded with a protest by ABVP members against the VC for alleged discrepancies in valuation and delay in announcing results, where one of the protesters allegedly threw a flagstaff at Dev, which missed him by a whisker. The protests were construed as a part of the shadow fighting between the VC and the Registrar. The VC stopped visiting the main campus after Mylarappa took charge in November, and has sought police protection to visit the campus.
