The ultimate aim of Bengaluru cafe terror attack accused Mussavir Hussain Shazib and Abdul Matheen Taahaa, now in the custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), was to carry out blast after blast to unsettle India and create an anti-establishment narrative, top intelligence officials have told CNN-News18.
They were hiding in West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district and, if they hadn’t been caught, the duo would have gone dormant after some time and looked for new targets, said the sources.
“They never wanted to go abroad as their tasks were limited only to India,” said an official. “This is the same pattern of the Indian Mujahideen, who restricted their activities to India.”
The terrorists were on Telegram and other encrypted apps where they were communicating, said sources.
“Their human weakness was almost negligible and only Matheen was in touch with his mother,” an official said. “They had more than a dozen IDs in different names.”
These Aadhaar documents were forged only for use in hotels, said sources.
“They are completely anti-establishment and anti-India, and wanted to attack important leaders and important places,” an official said. “It will be probed if they were given specific tasks to kill big leaders during elections. So far they wanted to kill and attack only to make news.”
The duo wanted to escape from Chennai after being exposed, so they went to Kolkata and got new IDs, said the sources. After this, they decided to move to Purba Mednipur for new documents and survival, they added.
