BANGALORE: A panel discussion on Solid Waste Management was held as part of Bengaluru Recyling Habba celebrations in the city. The discussion focused on the issue of extended producer responsibility and sought to debate on whether it is just law or duty.Sajan Poovayya, Lawyer, was the moderator and the round table featured 7 panelists from sectors like the State Pollution Control Board, Ministry of Environment and Forests and Pharmaceuticals. The panelists discussed topics like bio-medical waste, plastic waste and so on. “In Bangalore alone 4,500 tonne of unrecycled garbage is collected every day. If one takes the responsibility of recycling this garbage, 1,000 tonne of recycled goods can be produced. There is a market for recycled goods in Bangalore” said Joga Rao, vice-president of ITC & Ramky group. On the question of a dumping area for Bio-Medical Waste products being set up near Dabaspete, Manish Patil, Himalaya Drug Company said, “If the expired medicines are with the pharmaceutical units, we can collect and recycle them, however if it is with the consumer then they should take responsibility to return it to the dispensary”A Bruhat Banglore Mahanagara Palike(BBMP) official announced plans to set up a designated dumping area in each ward for products that can be recycled. “We are expecting good response from the public for this plan,” he added. The Recycle Habba will go on till Nov 12 and will have other programmes like Flea Market and Trash Trail.
