KOCHI: Like Italian marines, Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, the bail order issued by the Kerala High Court is a relief to the Prison Department too. The stay of the marines at the Borstal School was a headache for the department as it would have forced them to cancel the scheduled reopening of the school which was closed for the last eight years.The Prison Department has plans to open the school in the first week of June.“Since the marines will vacate the place, we can start the school from this week. They will be released as soon as they present the documents before the superintendent of the school,” Prison Department sources said.Borstal School superintendent K Anil Kumar said that about 20 students will be admitted to the school this year. “The inmates will be in the age group of 18-21. We are planning to shift the prisoners from other jails in two weeks. Professional training classes and extra-curricular activities are also planned for the inmates here,” Anil Kumar said.But the school is facing acute shortage of staff. “The school was closed eight years ago and several teachers and staff here were transferred to other schools. We have to get them back. The Education Department has to allot us teachers. However, we will reopen the school this year itself. The renovation work of the building is on and it will be completed soon,” Anil Kumar said.
