BHUBANESWAR: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on Thursday assured the State Government of timely restoration of Jagamohan and Singhadwar of Jagannath Temple in Puri.ASI Director-General Goutam Sengupta who met Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik here told the latter that steps were taken to conduct a 3D Laser scanning of the world heritage structure -- Sun Temple at Konark -- to study the internal condition of the sand-filled Jagamohan portion.Sengupta assured Naveen to use endoscopy camera to take pictures of the interior condition of Jagamohan which remains closed from all sides, a senior official of the Culture Department said.It has been decided to use 3D laser scanning by Central Building Research Institute for a thorough study of the inside condition of Konark temple for better conservation, he told the meeting.The Black Pagoda has already lost its main temple while only Jagamohan remained intact. The British government, between 1900- 1903, had sealed Jagamohan by filling it with sand. Though ASI had been trying to conserve the remaining Jagamohan portion of the heritage building by uncovering the seal, it had been facing opposition from different quarters, including senior archaeologists.The meeting decided to ask IIT, Bhubaneswar, to study the iron support system in the Konark temple.Sengupta also assured the State Government that ASI had already started work to put an end to the water-logging problem in the Konark Temple. The problem would be solved within two months, he told the meeting. “We have an ambitious plan for the conservation of Konark Temple,” Sengupta told reporters after meeting the Chief Minister.The ASI boss also informed the State Government about its plan to appoint a deputy superintendent- rank archaeologist at Puri to monitor conservation work of Konark Temple and the 12th century Jagannath Temple. The State also requested the ASI authorities to expedite conservation of other important monuments at Dhauli, Sisupalgarh and Hirapur.
