'Arvind Kejriwal Taking Legal System For Joyride, Interim Bail Plea Has Oblique Motives': ED Tells Delhi Court

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday accused Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of misusing the legal system and taking it for a “joyride,” alleging that his interim bail plea has “oblique” motives.

The central probe agency’s comments came shortly after the Rouse Avenue Court reserved its order on the interim bail plea filed by Kejriwal.

“It’s been one week since 25 May. There is no explanation for why he didn’t go for a test. Can the entire system be taken for a joyride like this? This is being used for oblique reasons,” questioned Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

He further asked, “If such a luxury plea comes from other litigant, what would we do as prosecutors? We oppose. And we are opposing.”

“He is no more or no less than any other jail inmate. He will be treated, whatever required will be provided to him in jail but don’t play with the system,” Mehta added.

Highlighting that the Delhi Chief Minister has to surrender tomorrow (June 2), Senior Advocate N Hariharan, appearing for Kejriwal, urged the court to decide earlier in light of this aspect.

“It will become infructuous. I require it latest by tomorrow. Otherwise I will have to surrender,” Hariharan said.

“You have said you are not asking for an extension of interim bail,” the judge replied, reiterating that the order would be pronounced only on June 5.

Seeking interim bail on medical grounds, Hariharan argued that the concern is Kejriwal’s high blood sugar levels and keto numbers.

“There has been a drastic drop in his weight…These tests are done systematically and that’s something why I sought for 7 days interim bail,” argued Hariharan.

Hariharan, along with Advocates Vivek Jain and Rajat Bhardwaj, represented the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief, while the financial watchdogs were represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, and Advocates Zoeb Hossain and Vivek Gurnani.
