New Delhi: The spiritual guru of the Art of Living Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is in Iraq to visit the foundation’s trauma relief centre Baghdad.
Armed with yoga, meditation and breathing techniques, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar arrived in Baghdad at the invitation of Iraq’s Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
The Art of Living centre also distributes medicine, food and clothes to the people of the war-ravaged country.
The spiritual guru’s followers also run a vocational training course for women. Shankar said his message was peace for all Iraqis.
"We believe there should be conflict resolution through these programmes. We have Art of Living centres in Iraq. But we would like to reach out to different groups," he said.
Shankar also agreed to Maliki’s proposal and said the Art of Living programme should aim at a wider coverage involving a cross-section of the Iraqi society.
With his country suffering a sharp spike in casualties from insurgent attacks, al-Maliki said he believed humanitarian organisations can play a key role in rebuilding efforts.
His government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh informed that pullout of coalition forces was not possible until Iraq is able to have national forces of its own.
