The fiftieth annual day celebrations of ‘Silent Spring’ by Rachel Carson, a book which upheld the evil sides of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) will be observed on Thursday. The organisers of the event, Kerala Sasthrasahithya Parishath will organise a seminar in connection with it.
The Parishath officials said that the book has thrown light on the ill effects of pesticide DDT for the first time.
“This book deserves special mention. The book as well as the life of author proved instrumental in fighting against the company that reaped profits by manufacturing DDT. Eventually, it culminated in banning the disastrous pesticide,” they said.
The organisers said the book has now become the bible of the environmentalists. “Unfortunately, the threat of DDT did not end with it. The world is still fighting over it. At this juncture, the golden jubilee celebration of the book deserves special mention,” they said.
In connection with the function, the Kerala Sasthrasahithya Parishad will organise a seminar on Thursday. On the occasion, the revised edition of ‘Padatha Pakshikal’ written by M K Prasad and published by Sasthrasahithya Parishath will be released.
