An ex-CM and Davangere: Down Memory Lane

DAVANGERE: Former chief minister S Bangarappa had a long-standing association with Davangere which was instrumental in the launch of his Karnataka Congress Party in 1993.By then, Bangarappa had won the support of the backward classes, minorities and Dalits by daring to oppose a national party like the Congress. As a first step, Bangarappa’s KCP managed to win ten seats, including one from Jagalur constituency in 1994, when H D Deve Gowda wrested power in state.People in Davangere still regard the crowd gathered at the launch of the KSP as the biggest-ever for a political convention the district has ever seen.
