AMU succumbs to pressure, may allow undergraduate girls in Central library

Aligarh: After much outrage, the Aligarh Muslim University seems to have bowed down to pressure. It has informed the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry that a request by undergraduate girls of Women's College to access the central library is under consideration.

The reply came after the HRD Ministry sought an explanation from the University over their order of not allowing undergraduate girls from getting an access to the Central library in the campus.

Vice Chancellor of the varsity Zameeruddin Shah had sparked a row saying that there would be 'four-times more boys in the library if girls were allowed in' and that girl students cannot be allowed inside due to a space crunch in the campus.

HRD Minister Smriti Irani had called the Vice Chancellor's remark an insult to the women.

However, the students had later backed the Vice Chancellor's remarks and said that his comments have been misinterpreted. "We raised the demand to use the central library during university polls. There is a space problem. His remarks were misinterpreted," a student had said.

What's your reaction?
