New Delhi: The Shiv Sena-ruled Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has decided to shift its salary accounts from Axis Bank to a nationalised bank, a civic official said on Thursday.
Thane Mayor Naresh Mhaske, in a meeting, directed officials to shift the accounts from Axis Bank to a nationalised bank, the official said.
The development follows a war of words on social media between the Sena and Amruta Fadnavis — wife of former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis — who holds a senior position at the Axis Bank.
TMC Mayor Naresh Maske told CNN-News18 that he learnt on Wednesday that the Home department has decided to transfer the salary accounts of the police department to a nationalised bank from a private bank.
"I have ordered my officials to transfer all the salary accounts, tax accounts, etc., to a nationalised bank. It is a rule that all government-related accounts should be in nationalised banks. I have asked them to do all the transactions of TMC through nationalised banks," he said.
"It is the money of the people. If anything goes wrong in a private bank, then these organisations should not face any problems, that is our intention behind taking this decision," he added.
