American Rapper Doug E Fresh will perform during the 59th birthday celebrations of Mata Amritanandamayi on Wednesday at the Math in Amritapuri, Kollam.
Doug E Fresh is a regular attendee of Mata’s New York programmes and has performed at Amma’s programmes several times. After performing at a function of Mata in New York, he had said: “Amma is such a loving person. You get pure energy with no ulterior motive. Amma just wants to make the world a better place. I think a lot of people need to feel her energy because it will make a difference in their life.”
Fresh considers his performances as ‘a gift to Amma’, a statement from the Math said.
Doug E Fresh is popularly known as ‘The Human Beatbox’, for his uncanny ability to imitate the sounds of percussion instruments, drum machines and turntables.
He came on the hip-hop scene in the mid-1980s in New York City, performing with other hip-hop stars-in-the-making such as Slick Rick and Spoonie Gee.
Rap and hip-hop aficionados consider him a hip-hop pioneer and icon, and his albums ‘Oh, My God!’ (1986) and ‘The World’s Greatest Entertainer’ (1988) are considered classics in the genre.
He also played one of the most memorable performances in the 1984 hip-hop drama film ‘Beat Street’.
