New Delhi: After writer Nayantara Sahgal, renowned poet and former chairman of the Lalit Kala Akademi Ashok Vajpeyi returned his Sahitya Akademi award against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence over the Dadri lynching case.
"An innocent man is being killed. The Culture Minister goes and says it's an accidental death. This is unbelievable. I think the PM owes it to his office. He should come out forcefully and should ask his irresponsible Ministers to act in fair way," he said.
Both Vajpeyi and Sahgal are also protesting against the killings of rationalists MM Kalburgi, Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare.
Nayantara, who is known for her upright and outspoken political views, "the Prime Minister remains silent about this reign of terror. We must assume he dare not alienate evil-doers who support his ideology."
Speaking against the murder of the rationalists, she said, "Rationalists who question superstition, anyone who questions any aspect of the ugly and dangerous distortion of Hinduism known as Hindutva – whether in the intellectual or artistic sphere, or whether in terms of food habits and lifestyle – are being marginalized, persecuted, or murdered.
Earlier, Hindi writer Uday Prakash had also returned the prestigious literary award. He had said that there is a sense of fear among writers after the murders of the rationalists.
