CHENNAI: Plans are afoot to develop an aerospace cluster in Tamil Nadu in the next five years to make the state one of the top four aerospace destinations in India, according to FICCI.Asit K Barma, convenor of FICCI-TN State Council manufacturing panel said that FICCI has prepared a pathbreaking proposal for creation of aerospace cluster in the state. Eyeing the huge demand in the avaiation sector, particularly in defence as well as private jets, Barma said the cluster will give value addition of $20 billion to the state besides employing a 500,000 workforce by 2025.He said FICCI is proposing the cluster be set up in Avadi, which is the hub of Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE). “The DRDO labs can work in conjunction with the aerospace research and development organisation and manufacturers of aviation industry spare parts. This will also enhance the skills of the workforce and provide jobs to the people,” he added. He also said that the proposal comes in the wake of the Chief Minister highlighting the need to create centres of excellence in aerospace and defence.
