CHENNAI: In the light of Thursday’s incident at Tiruvottiyur court where an undertrial stripped before the magistrate, judicial authorities and advocates have stressed the need for installing videoconferencing facility at the court.Sundar (27) of Kodungaiyur, who was arrested for attempt to murder last month, demanded a copy of the chargesheet when he was produced before the court for extension of his custody, sources said. Since two others involved in the case had jumped bail, the copy was not served on him. The undertrial stripped before the magistrate, who directed the police to remove him from the court hall. However, he damaged windowpanes of vehicles parked on the premises and a case was registered against him by the Tiruvottiyur Police.Sources said judicial authorities and advocates wanted the security in the court stepped up and, at the same time, felt that installation of videoconferencing facility in the court could prevent such incidents in future. The risk and the cost involved in transporting remand prisoners with a history of violence for extension of their remands could easily be avoided if the facility is installed, they added.Pointing out that the Ponneri court had teleconferencing facility, they claimed that the Tiruvottiyur court, which handled a large number of cases coming from places such as Madhavaram, Puzhal, Ennore and Manali, lacked safety mechanisms. Besides, they also blamed the police for not being alert in handling those with a similar background like Sundar, who had been booked under the Goondas Act two months ago.
