A total of nine passengers were killed and 22 injured on Wednesday after the bus they were travelling in plunged into a rivulet in Jangareddigudem in Andhra Pradesh’s West Godavari district. The bus was going from Velerupadu to Jangareddygudem.
Nine people, including the bus driver Chinnarao, were killed in the incident. The injured have been shifted to Jangareddygudem Area Hospital for treatment.
The bus was carrying 47 passengers when it fell into the river. Most of the dead were women and children. Locals people died in the bus as they could not come out of the vehicle when it fell in the water.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the accident.

Four of the deceased were identified as RTC bus driver Chinnarao, Podapati Durga, Keta Varalakshmi and A. Madhubabu. Details of the remaining five are yet to be made available by the police.
The death toll is expected to increase further. According to locals, the bus collided with the railing of the bridge over the Jalleru river and fell into the water. Some passengers were brought ashore by locals with the help of boats.
Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed shock over the accident and extended condolences to the families of those who died in the mishap.
He directed the authorities to pay ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased and instructed the district collector to take appropriate steps in providing better treatment to the injured.
