New Delhi: Over 750 Hyundai workers were detained for assembling on the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's route in Chennai on Saturday morning. They had assembled there without police permission as they wanted to give a memorandum to M Karunaidhi.

Police said the workers were held when they assembled at Kumananchavady near Poonamallee, through which the Chief Minister had to pass to reach Sriperumbudur to inaugurate the new plant of the car major.

Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) General Secretary A Soundararajan, in a statement condemned the arrest and sought the immediate intervention of the Chief Minister.

He said that after the Hyundai management had prevented the workers from attending the function, they had assembled at Kumananchavady to give a reception to the Chief Minister on the way.

Claiming that over 500 workers were arrested, Soundararajan alleged that the basic democratic rights of the workers were being trampled upon by the police and the Hyundai management and wanted the Chief Minister to put an end to this.
