70 sovereigns, Rs 25 lakh robbed from jewellery

Gold ornaments weighing 70 sovereigns and Rs 25 lakh were allegedly stolen from a jewellery-cum-pawn shop at Silaiman near here on Wednesday.

Police said the V M S jewellery shop located on Rameswaram High Road at Silaiman was being run by local resident Malaisamy.

He stayed with his family in their house located behind the shop.

As usual, Malaisamy closed shop on Tuesday night and went home.

On Wednesday morning, some neighbours told him that the locks of the rolling shutter of the shop were open. Sensing something amiss, Malaisamy alerted police, who reached the spot and commenced investigations.

After accounting for the jewels kept in his shop, Malaisamy lodged a complaint with Silaimaan Police, stating that around 70 sovereigns kept in an almirah, 2 kg of silver and Rs 25 lakh in cash was missing. Police estimated the stolen jewels to be worth Rs 25 lakh. “We have collected the fingerprints of the accused,” said Inspector Muthukumar.
