CHENNAI: Two engineering students were killed when their car collided head on with a bus near Uthandi on East Coast Road on Friday.The victims were identified as Vijay and Swaminathan, both 21 years old and students of Eshwari Engineering College in Chennai.The duo, accompanied by friends, were on their way to spend the weekend at Mahabalipuram when the mishap occurred. They were travelling in two cars.They left the city around 7 pm and reached the toll plaza at Uthandi.One car crossed the toll gate and the second collided with an IGCAR staff bus that was on its way to the city from Kalpakkam.Police said Swaminathan was killed at the scene and Vijay died while being taken to a private hospital.An eyewitness attributed the accident to highspeed driving.According to a traffic police official, "The car was being driven rashly. Minutes after it crossed us, we heard a loud bang and saw the mangled car. Both the driver and the passenger in the front seat were badly injured."
Police said ECR is among the top five accidentprone roads in Chennai.
