New Delhi: Two labourers were killed and at least seven others injured when an under-construction bridge of the Delhi Metro collapsed in South Delhi early on Sunday morning, in a similar mishap in nine months.

The incident was reported from near Lady Shri Ram College in Dhamrutpur near Lajpat Nagar around 5:00 AM.

Fire-brigade officials said two labourers working at the site were killed.

Delhi Metro spokesperson Anuj Dayal said seven persons were injured in the incident, while eyewitnesses pegged the figure at over 11. The injured have been rushed to the AIIMS.

Dayal said it was "a structural collapse and we are investigating the matter."

"It appears there is a problem in design of the peer of the bridge. We were trying to rectify it," he said.

Two labourers are still trapped in the debris, he said.

All those injured in the incident are labourers of the contractor, Gammon India.

The under-construction bridge fell on a water pipeline which led to some flooding in the area. An eyewitness said 20-25 labourers were working on the site.

In a similar incident in October last year, two persons were killed and 16 others injured when a portion of an under-construction bridge of the Delhi Metro collapsed and fell on a bus on Vikas Marg in east Delhi's Lakshmi Nagar area.
