HYDERABAD: Sixteen people were killed in lightning strikes in six districts as heavy thunder showers accompanied by gales created havoc in the coastal districts of the state on Sunday. The Met officials predicted that the thunder showers will continue for another 48 hours in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions.Apart from causing severe damage to property and crops in the districts of Khammam, Guntur, Krishna, Prakasam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Kadapa and Nalgonda, the thunder showers coupled with lightning have killed 16 persons across the state including eight persons in Guntur district alone. Three persons died in Prakasam district, two in Khammam and one each in Krishna, Kadapa and Warangal districts. Over 15 persons were injured in these incidents.The highest rainfall of 7 cm was received at Pathapatnam in Srikakulam district since Friday followed by 4 cm each in Palasa and Tekkali in Srikakulam district and Venkatagirikota in Chittoor district. Isolated rainfall occurred over other areas in coastal Andhra, Telangana and Rayalaseema regions due to trough of low pressure moving from Chhattisgarh towards south Tamil Nadu.Assistant meteorologist S Venkateswara Rao attributed the sudden phenomenon to increasing temperatures resulting in heat trough formed over the land and moving towards coastal Andhra.Meanwhile, chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy announced exgratia to people who lost their life in the incidents under various schemes including Apadbandhu.
