Jammu: Over 15,000 passengers, mostly tourists, were stranded at the Jammu Tawi railway station today after trains service was affected following unrest in neighbouring state of Punjab.
"Three morning trains, including Sarvodya Express, Malwa Express and Swaraj Express, were also cancelled due to tension in the neighbouring state," an official source told UNI.
There was no place at the platform as passengers were sitting on the floor and road outside the station premises.
All the trains leaving Jammu Tawi station on Monday afternoon and Monday night were cancelled following violent protests in several parts of Punjab. Stranded passengers, mostly Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrims, had an uncomfortable night at the platform.
"At this point of problem, the shopkeepers at railway station have also started charging double the amount on eatables," Ram Kumar, pilgrim tourist from Madhya Pradesh said.
Meanwhile, 106 Pakistani citizens who are stranded at Atari Railway Station since Monday had to spend the night sleeping on the railway platform and inside the train.
They had come to India to visit their relatives and friends, but are now finding it difficult to even contact anyone as their mobile phones do not work here.
These passengers are stuck without food and water and they have not received any help from the Railway authorities.
There are several families with children who have no provisions for food or water. They are now waiting for conditions to improve in the state to be able to move out of the station.
