15 Perish in Arunachal Landslide Triggered By Heavy Rains

At least 15 labourers have been killed in a landslide in Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh. The landslide, triggered by torrential rains, buried a labour camp resulting in the casualties.

Fifteen bodies were found buried under the debris. "Search is on for two missing workers," police officer Nabin Payeng said. Rescue operations are underway.

Three workers managed to escape from the camp, which is situated at an altitude of more than 3,000 meters (7,500 feet), Payeng said. The area was lashed by pre-monsoon rains this week.

The tragedy took place at 3 AM when 17 labourers engaged in construction works were inside the camp. According to Additional Deputy Commissioner (Headquarters) Lod Gambo the place is four kms from Tawang town.

The PWD road between New Lebrang and government higher secondary school has also been blocked due to landslide, while damages to residential buildings, too, have been reported from the area.

Heavy rainfall in the past few days in the district resulted in a flood-like situation which severely damaged the Kitpi Ph-I and Ph-II hydel projects.

Power department officials said restoration work could not be started due to the continuous rain and both the power stations had been shut down after suffering some damage due to the floods.

Tawang Deputy Commissioner Duly Kamduk has directed officials to assess the situation and submit a detailed report.
