Srinagar: A policeman was on Sunday shot dead and another critically injured when militants opened fire in Lal Chowk at the heart of this city, officials said.

The two personnel of Kothibagh police station, who were on duty near the Ghanta Ghar (clock tower) at Lal Chowk were fired at by unidentified militants from point blank range at around 1250 hrs (IST), they said.

Both policemen were critically injured in the shooting, which created panic in the area. The rebels fled from the scene immediately.

The policemen were taken to SMHS Hospital where one of them was declared dead on arrival, the officials said. A hunt has been launched to nab the militants involved in the attack, they added.

No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the incident.

Additional police and paramilitary forces were deployed in Lal Chowk following a suicide attack by militants at Badshah Chowk on October four.

The ensuing gun battle, which lasted nearly 20 hours, left 10 people, including seven security personnel and two militants, dead and 20 others injured.
