After Telangana Feat, Congress Roots for ‘Soniamma’ to Contest 2024 Lok Sabha Elections from Southern State

Telangana Congress has urged Sonia Gandhi to contest from the state for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as the party unit believes the youngest state is indebted to ‘Soniamma’ for granting the statehood.

A resolution to this effect was passed by the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) that met for the first time on Monday after the party came to power in Telangana. It was pointed out that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had contested general elections from Medak Lok Sabha constituency in 1980 and came out victorious. The Congress had won 41 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in united Andhra Pradesh that year.

The Malkajgiri Lok Sabha seat is being presented as the top choice for Sonia Gandhi as it was represented by Revanth Reddy before he became the chief minister. With Congress in power, its leaders feel that Sonia Gandhi, who took the decision to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh in the face of fierce opposition, will ensure victory in the Lok Sabha elections.

The leaders also decided that almost 50,000 party workers will be sent from Telangana to Nagpur in Maharashtra for the Congress Foundation Day on December 28.

The PAC meeting was chaired by AICC in charge for Telangana Manikrao Thakre and attended by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy, Convener Shabbir Ali, senior BC leader V Hanumantha Rao and others.

The members took the decisions regarding preparations for the 2024 polls. In the last general elections in 2019, the K Chandrashekar Rao-led Bharat Rashtra Samithi (formerly known as Telangana Rashtra Samithi) won nine seats (Chevella, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Mahabubnagar, Medak, Nagarkurnool, Peddapalle, Warangal, Zaheerabad), the BJP bagged four (Adilabad, Karimnagar, Secunderabad, Nizamabad), Congress secured three (Nalgonda, Bhongir and Malkajgiri) and AIMIM clinched Hyderabad.

The Congress also announced in charges for 17 Lok Sabha seats in the state. While CM Revanth Reddy will be the in charge of Chevella and Mahabubnagar, Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu will take care of Secunderabad and Hyderabad.
