How to Paint a Barn
How to Paint a Barn
Learning how to paint a barn can be quite an undertaking. You must take certain aspects into consideration before beginning the task to ensure that the new paint job lasts at least 10 years and hopefully longer. The condition of the barn must be evaluated and issues need to be addressed before beginning to paint. You also must consider timing and seasonal changes so that your paint job is completed while the weather permits. Though it is a lot of work, keeping paint in good condition is an important part of barn maintenance that will help the building remain in good shape for many years.
Steps

Evaluate the surface of your barn before painting. Leaks in the roof, cracks in the walls and other structural problems should be corrected prior to barn painting to ensure that the job lasts. A power washer works well, though you may need to scrub some areas by hand.

Wash the surface of your barn to remove dirt, grime and loose paint chips.

Scrape all loose paint chips off the surface of the barn. Use chemical paint remover for stubborn areas.

Select an exterior latex paint that is 100 percent acrylic.

Allow the surface of your barn to dry before beginning to paint. Make sure rain is not in the forecast. Expect to use a gallon of paint for every 300 to 400 square feet (28 to 37 square meters).

Paint your barn.

Look at your barn once you finish the first coat of paint to determine if it needs a second. If it does Repeat the last steps.

Apply a second coat to your barn, if needed.

Paint windows, doors, hardware and trim with an enamel paint.

What's your reaction?
