How to Add & Use Discord Soundboard Sounds: Step-by-Step Tutorial
Are you looking to add some sounds to your Discord Soundboard? Soundboards are a new but still experimental feature to Discord. If your server doesn't have it yet, you'll have to wait until you get Soundboard access. If your server does have a Soundboard, though, uploading sounds is a simple process that is no more difficult than adding a custom emoji or sticker.
Things You Should Know
  • To add sounds to your Discord Soundboard, go to your server's settings and upload them under "Soundboard."
  • You must be on a computer to add sounds to your Discord server Soundboard.
  • You must have the "Create Expressions" role in your Discord server to add sounds.

Adding Sounds to Your Discord Soundboard

Obtain a sound. To add a sound to your Soundboard, it must be a maximum of 5 seconds long, in MP3 format, and smaller than 512kb. There are a few ways to get sounds: Record your own. You can record sounds on your phone or computer using a built-in voice recorder, or with a free program like Audacity. If you record a sound on your phone, send it to your computer to add it to your Soundboard, as Discord's mobile app doesn't support uploading to your Soundboard yet. If you didn't record in MP3, convert it to MP3 before uploading. Use a pre-existing audio or video source. If you don't already have the audio or video downloaded, download it by using a video downloader, or record the audio from your computer using Audacity. Then, use Audacity to trim the sound clip to fit Discord's specifications. Download pre-made sound clips. Use a site like Myinstants to find funny or meme sounds that are already made that you can download and add to your Soundboard.

Open a Discord server where you have the Create Expressions permission. If you're a server admin, you likely already have this permission. In your Discord Server settings, the Create Expressions permission is the same permission that allows you to add custom emojis, stickers, and sounds. You must do this on a computer, as you cannot upload Soundboard sounds on mobile.

Open the Server Settings and select Soundboard. All of the current Soundboard sounds will be shown. All servers eligible to use the Soundboard can upload up to 8 sounds. Additional Soundboard slots can be unlocked with Server Boosts (24 slots for Tier 1, 36 for Tier 2, and 48 for Tier 3).

Click the blue Upload Sound button. This opens a popup with a few fields for your new sound. The fields with red asterisks are required.

Click the Browse button and navigate to your sound. Open the sound once you've found it to add it to the file field.

Add a sound name. Each sound must have a name. Add a short but descriptive name so users know what to expect when clicking the sound.

Add a related emoji and adjust the sound volume, optionally. Neither option is required, but if you want to add an emoji that helps describe your sound, you can do it in the Related Emoji field. If your sound is too loud or too quiet, you can adjust the Sound Volume.

Press the Upload button to add your sound. If you don't want to continue uploading the sound, click the Never mind button instead. Once your sound has uploaded, you can use it in your voice calls immediately.

Using Soundboard Sounds on Desktop

Join a voice chat in a server with a Soundboard. If you don't have Discord Nitro, you'll be able to use the sounds from that server's Soundboard as well as some built-in Discord sounds. If you do have Nitro, you can use sounds from any server that you're in (similar to emojis).

Click the megaphone button underneath the Disconnect button. It's next to the rocketship button that starts an activity, and when you hover the icon, it says "Open Soundboard."

Scroll to find the sound you uploaded. If you are voice chatting in the server where the sound is located, it'll be near the top of your Soundboard. Otherwise, you can use the search bar to search for the sound you want.

Click the sound name. The sound will immediately play in the voice call. If you want to test a sound before you click it, hover the sound and click the speaker button on the left side of the sound button.
