Lionel Messi set to bag new Barcelona contract
"Messi is under contract until 2018, but we want to improve it to adapt to football's current situation," Barca president has said.

Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu has confirmed that club's top Argentine star Lionel Messi will be offered a new contract very soon, while terming the criticism of the club's long-serving star as "harsh".

"Messi is under contract until 2018," Bartomeu told TV3. "But we want to improve it to adapt to football's current situation," hinting that the club will do any thing to keep Messi at Camp Nou.

"I think people are being unfair on Leo Messi. He has led us to so many wins in recent years. He has led the team and done so very well, and we have no doubt that he will continue to lead the club into the future.

"He's a young player, the best in the world, and we have every faith in him," the president added.

When asked about coach Gerado Martino's future with the club, Bartomeu refused to give a clear picture. "We have a lot of respect for Martino; we still have five games left in the league and it is our responsibility to be competitive and keep up the pressure on the leaders.

"A few days after that, I'll be speaking personally to Tata Martino about other things," he said.
