Manchester: Manchster United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Nemanja Vidic could face up to four months out after suffering from medial ligament damage during their Champions League defeat to Basel on Wednesday.
The Serbian international was stretchered off after a collision with Marco Streller in the 41st minute. As they both fell to the ground in a tangle, the Basel captain's weight fell on to Vidic's straightened right leg with his knee bending towards the ground.
The 30-year-old immediately signalled to the bench that he was in trouble, and the medical team were quick to decide a stretcher was requited. He was replaced by Jonny Evans and eventually left the ground on crutches.
Ferguson told reporters: "We don't know with Vidic. It's certainly medial ligament but hopefully that's the worst it is."
This latest blow follows Javier Hernandez's ankle knock which he suffered against Aston Villa last Saturday and has ruled the striker out for up to a month, and Anderson's knee injury which looks set to keep the Brazilian sidelined until February.
