Manchester United owners, the Glazers, are planning to implement a new scheme, which will see the club players wearing augmented reality devices, a report said. A source familiar with the Glazer family’s business model said that the big idea, or maybe the big hope that the Glazers have – and this was driven by Ed Woodward – is “the emergence of Augmented reality,” according to ESPN.
The ESPN report further said that Glazers were smart enough to identify Augmented Reality as the next big opportunity, which could open several ways of building capital. While the new scheme could propel the Glazers into a new realm of money-making, the outlet recognised that the family had developed a habit of getting things wrong.
The report also suggested that the technology was already out there enabling fans from across the world to witness the game from the AR device placed on the player’s body after paying a fee to enjoy this novelty. “Just imagine how much United could generate from their huge global fanbase if supporters were able to pay to be Marcus Rashford or Bruno Fernandes for 90 minutes?” the report further said.
While the Glazers work on their latest plans, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is still awaiting the Premier League ratification for his 25 per cent stake in Manchester United. Considered to be the second richest man in the United Kingdom, Sir Ratcliffe will soon be taking charge of the football operations from the Glazer family. Having built his wealth mostly through INEOS, the British billionaire is now looking to use his business expertise to revive the club he once grew up supporting. It was recently revealed that the 71-year-old has also plans for the club’s 114-year-old stadium, which he looks to turn into the “Wembley of the North”.
While Sir Jim Ratcliffe continues to explore options to strengthen the club, coach Erik ten Hag has been tasked with improving United’s performances on the football pitch. The Dutch coach brought home the club’s first trophy in six years in 2022. However, everything seems to have fallen apart since then. United were recently eliminated from the UEFA Champions League and are currently placed sixth in the Premier League table. They are next set to take on Aston Villa on February 11.
