Sanjeev Hans, an IAS officer from the 1997 batch of the Bihar cadre, has recently come under scrutiny for corruption and bribery charges. Originally from Punjab, Hans pursued a bachelor’s degree in engineering before preparing for the UPSC exams, where he achieved significant success, leading him to become an IAS officer. After his training, he started his administrative career as the SDM of Banka district in Bihar. Over the years, he held prominent positions, including the post of Collector in various districts of Bihar. His career saw him rise to the position of Secretary and CMD of Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited, as well as the Water Resources Department of the Bihar Government.
Hans is now facing allegations of having assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. It has been reported that while holding these key positions, he was involved in unethical practices, including demanding luxury cars as bribes and embezzling large sums of money from a woman. This scandal has raised concerns about corruption within the administrative services, as investigations into Hans’s actions continue.
Sanjeev Hans, like many young individuals, was deeply influenced by his surroundings, particularly by his father, who served as an officer in the State Administrative Service (PCS). Growing up with a role model in the form of his father, Hans aspired to follow in his footsteps and become a successful officer. His dedication and hard work led him to achieve his dream by clearing the UPSC exams and joining the prestigious IAS.
Despite realising his ambitions, Hans’s journey took a darker turn. The lure of wealth and the temptation to amass money beyond his means entangled him in a web of corruption. ED had raided the premises of IAS Sanjeev Hans and his close associates in the disproportionate assets case. During this, gold worth Rs 1.5 crore, cash worth Rs 87 lakh and silver worth Rs 11 lakh were recovered. Now, on the recommendation of ED, Bihar’s Special Surveillance Unit (SVU) has registered an FIR against IAS officer Sanjeev Hans and former Jhanjharpur MLA Gulab Yadav.
Allegedly, during his tenure as the Principal Secretary of the Energy Department and the CMD of Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited (BSPHCL), Hans implemented the Smart Meter Installation Campaign in Bihar. It is reported that during this period, he accepted a Mercedes car as a bribe from the company responsible for installing smart meters.
In addition to the financial corruption allegations, a woman has accused Hans and former MLA Gulab Yadav of gang rape. While the High Court initially rejected the victim’s petition, she has now taken the case to the Supreme Court, seeking further legal action.
