The University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET) 2024 recorded an 81 per cent participation rate, with 9,08,580 applicants taking the test on June 18. The National Testing Agency (NTA) administered the test in offline format in two sessions for 83 topics at 1,205 examination sites spread across 317 cities.

The OMR-based test had 11,21,225 students registered, including 6,35,587 females, 4,85,579 men, and 59 third-gender applicants. Last year, 9,45,872 candidates registered, with an overall attendance of 73.6 per cent.

NTA acknowledged the exam’s successful completion in a formal statement, recognising the efforts of City Coordinators, Centre Superintendents, Observers, as well as their own authorities and employees, for ensuring orderly behaviour at every centre.

Starting with this academic year, students for four-year undergraduate programmes will have the opportunity to apply for a “award of Junior Research Fellowship and admission to PhD only,” according to a new provision proposed by the UGC. Three categories are presently covered by the test, which is administered every two years:

–– Junior Research Fellowship and appointment as assistant professor

–– Appointment as assistant professor and admission to PhD

–– Admission to PhD only

The UGC NET 2024 was administered on June 18  using an OMR-based examination format in two shifts. The first shift runs from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by the second shift, which runs from 3 pm to 6 pm. On June 7, the NTA issued the UGC NET 2024 city intimation slip, informing applicants of the location of the test.

The NTA is offering exams for all 83 courses on a single day for the first time this year. Previously, the UGC NET test was conducted on many days for various disciplines.

The UGC NET is used to assess individuals’ eligibility for the positions of Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellowship in Indian institutions and colleges. For further information, applicants should visit the NTA’s official website.
