Indian Army Medical Officer: Salary, Eligibility And Educational Qualification
There are two ways to get recruited into the Indian army as a medical officer.

The Indian Armed Forces are a coveted career choice for many citizens, with opportunities available in the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force. The government recently initiated the Agniveer recruitment scheme, enabling the hiring of Class 12 pass candidates into the armed forces. Among the various branches, Army Medical Officers play a crucial role in providing healthcare services to military officers and, at times, civilians.

Recruitment for the position of Army Medical Officer typically requires completion of Class 12. There are two pathways to becoming a medical officer in the Indian Army. Aspiring candidates can either gain admission by passing the NEET exam or pursue MBBS and BDS courses and apply after graduation.

Those aspiring to become medical officers through NEET must secure admission to the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC). AFMC offers approximately 150 seats for the MBBS program, with specific quotas for men, women, and foreign citizens. Successful completion of MBBS from AFMC leads to a permanent commission in the Indian Army. The selection process involves NEET scores, an SSB interview, and a medical test.

Candidates with MBBS or BDS degrees from other institutes can also apply for medical officer positions across all three armed forces.

However, they are typically hired on a short service commission, with an initial commitment of ten years extendable for four more years. There’s an opportunity to secure a permanent position as a medical officer in the Indian Army. The Armed Forces Medical Service provides a competitive salary structure, including a basic salary of Rs 61,000, military pay service of Rs 15,500, and additional allowances totalling Rs 20,500. Consequently, the total salary for an Army Medical Officer amounts to approximately Rs 97,000.

Serving as an Army Medical Officer offers a prestigious and rewarding career path, with different entry routes based on educational qualifications and a comprehensive selection process that ensures the highest standards in healthcare for the Indian Armed Forces.
