The second edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 will commence at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru with last season’s finalists Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) kickstarting the new season, which promises to be bigger and better than in 2023.
Ahead of the opening clash, DC captain Meg Lanning, who will be featuring in her first tournament since announcing her international retirement in November 2023, said that she was looking forward to the second edition of the WPL and was excited to play again on the big stage.
“Yeah, I’ve been looking forward to this tournament for a while you know, having been part of it last year, it was great and a cool experience. I’ve played a lot of cricket over many years and sort of know what it takes to be out in the middle and perform and I feel like my prep has been nice. I’ve been playing some cricket back home in Australia.”
“So I come in confident looking forward to contributing to the team and hopefully helping Delhi win as many games as possible. So I’m excited to get out and play again on such a big stage,” Lanning told reporters on Thursday.
Lanning also said that the preparation in the lead-up to the tournament had been good with Annabel Sutherland, the most expensive buy at the auction-joining the squad and hoped for a good start to the competition on Friday.
“I think our preparation has been great. We’ve had a little bit more time this year to get together as a squad, and there have been some camps going on sort of throughout the year as well which has seen some really good improvement from everyone. So we’ve got a full squad together. “
“Now Annabel Sutherland came in yesterday to get everyone in together but we’ve had some good training sessions, and match simulation as well to allow people out in the middle to get a little bit of a feel for what their role might be.”
“So yeah, I feel like it’s been a smooth transition into the squad and everyone’s really excited to be part of a tournament again and pumped to be able to kick off the tournament tomorrow night against Mumbai which will be a great challenge and actually a really good contest and exciting as well,” Lanning said.
The former Australian captain also offered an update on the availability of South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp, who missed the solitary Test against Australia at Perth, and would most likely feature in the match on Friday.
“Yep, she’s looking good. She trained yesterday and seems to be doing pretty well. So she’s here again tonight and we’ll train and all things going well which we expect shall be available to play tomorrow,” she said.
