Mumbai Indians’ Tilak Varma was crucial to his side’s nine-run win against Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Thursday, April 18. Varma not only won Mumbai Indians the match on the field but also won the hearts of three young girls, as well as millions of fans, with his inspirational and heartwarming gesture off the field. In a video posted by Mumbai Indians on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Varma can be seen walking towards the balcony of the dressing room with a pair of his gloves. He then threw them towards three young girls dressed in all whites as they collected the gloves with big smiles on their faces. All three girls had come to watch the match between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians in Mullanpur, located in the state of Punjab Kings.

“Scored 34* (18), took an important catch and this… Gave two budding cricketers a reason to believe in their dreams. Tilak Varma,” read the caption of the post shared by MI on X.

Tilak Varma scored a quickfire 34 not out off 18 balls to help Mumbai Indians post 192 runs against Punjab Kings in 20 overs. Suryakumar Yadav top scored with a 53-ball 78. Rohit Sharma also played a vital knock at the top of the order, scoring 36 runs in 25 balls.

The run chase began in the worst possible manner for Punjab Kings, who were reduced to 14/4 thanks to a lightning opening spell from Jasprit Bumrah and Gerald Coetzee. Punjab Kings lost their fifth wicket at 51, setting Mumbai Indians up for a huge win.

It was not to be, though, as Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma took charge of the run chase and revived the innings. Although Shashank was dismissed for 41 off 25 balls, Ashutosh continued the counter-attack. Despite his best efforts, scoring 61 runs in just 28 balls, Ashutosh’s valiant knock went in vain as Mumbai Indians held their nerve in the final overs to stage a nine-run victory.

The win was Mumbai Indians’ third of the season. On the other hand, Punjab Kings are left with a mountain to climb as far as the race to the playoffs is concerned. They are languishing in ninth position in the IPL 2024 standings with four points from seven games.
