It’s been more than a year since Shikhar Dhawan has been sidelined from India’s scheme of things in the white-ball format. But more than losing his spot in the team, not being able to be with his son bothers him the most.
In a recent interaction with Humans of Bombay, Dhawan talked about his personal life and the various lessons he has learnt so far. An emotional Dhawan recalled his divorce from ex-wife Ayesha Mukherjee and how it had separated him from their son Zoravar.
“I want to spend quality time with him [Zoravar], want him to sleep in my arms, I want to hug him tight, give him the father’s love he deserves. I haven’t had a word with him for the last 5-6 months".
Shikhar Dhawan tied the knot in October 2012. After almost a decade in 2021, Dhawan’s wife revealed on social media that she intended to divorce the cricketer. After an official separation, Dhawan was granted mandatory visitation rights by the court that would allow him to spend time with his son both in India and Australia.
In the same podcast, Shikhar Dhawan also talked about his snub from the ICC Cricket World Cup last year. The 38-year-old explained that while the omission did affect him he wasn’t particularly ‘sad’ about not being called up for the marquee event.
“I wasn’t selected for the World Cup and because of my age I knew this World Cup was my last but I didn’t feel bad about it", he said.
Shikhar Dhawan’s last international appearance came during the third ODI of India’s Tour of Bangladesh in 2022. Playing in Chattogram on December 10, India recorded a massive 227-run victory over their Asian counterparts. Dhawan did not have a good performance in that match, scoring three runs in eight balls before being dismissed by Mehidy Hasan Miraj. It was Ishan Kishan who took the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium by storm as he scored a whopping 210 runs in just 131 balls. Virat Kohli was the other batter who stepped up for India, scoring 113 runs in 91 balls.
Shikhar Dhawan had a phenomenal career with the Indian cricket team, spanning from 2010 to 2022. The southpaw represented India in all three formats of the game while amassing more than 10,000 runs. He won the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy with India while finishing the tournament as the leading run-scorer. Dhawan was also the leading run scorer for India at the 2015 World Cup.
