A visa denial to Nepal leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane has led to protests in Kathmandu. The youths in Nepal’s capital city hit the streets to demand a visa for the cricketer so that he could participate in the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup.
According to cricnepal.com, people gathered outside the Prime Minister’s building in Baluwatar and also planned to protest outside the US embassy, to create pressure on the authorities for the visa issuance.
Earlier this month, the Patan High Court acquitted Lamichhane in the rape case, overturning the decision of the Kathmandu District Court. Following the court’s ruling, the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) lifted his suspension the same day. The chain of events cleared the Nepal cricketer to secure a spot in the World Cup squad. However, his participation took a hit on being denied a US visa on May 22.
Lamichhane took to social media to reveal the news. “And the US Embassy in Nepal did it again what they did back in 2019, they denied my Visa for the T-20 World Cup happening in the USA and West Indies. Unfortunate. I am sorry to all the well-wishers of Nepal Cricket,” he wrote.
The leg-spinner played a crucial role in Nepal’s qualification for the T20 World Cup. He picked up nine wickets in the T20 World Cup Asia Qualifiers, ending the tournament as Nepal’s leading wicket-taker. He delivered in the crucial semifinal match against the UAE with an outstanding spell of 4-1-14-2.
Nepal in the US
The Nepal cricket team has already arrived in the US and has been preparing for the T20 World Cup 2024. They played a warm-up fixture against Canada on May 27 and lost the game by 63 runs. They will now face hosts USA in a second practice game on May 30 before locking horns with the Netherlands in their campaign opener.
