On This Day in 2015: India Ends 22-Year Wait with Test Series Win in Sri Lanka
After a 63-run loss in the first Test, India bounced back in Colombo, dismissing Sri Lanka for 134 while chasing 413. India then secured a 117-run win in the third Test to clinch the series.

Team India, under the leadership of Virat Kohli, ended a 22-year-long wait to win a Test series in Sri Lanka on this day (September 1) in 2015. The visitors started the three-match assignment with a 63-run loss in the first Test. They bounced back in the second match in Colombo where Sri Lanka were bundled out for 134 while chasing a target of 413. India continued the momentum in the third Test and registered a 117-run victory to wrap up the series on a triumphant note.

In the third Test, Sri Lanka won the toss and asked India to bat first. The visitors faced a batting collapse in the first innings. They, however, were able to post 312 runs, riding on a gritty century by Cheteshwar Pujara who hit 14 boundaries in his 289-ball knock to score 145. Amit Mishra also made a crucial contribution, adding 59 runs to the scorecard.

Ishant Sharma showcased his brilliance with the ball. The Indian pacer registered a five-wicket haul, restricting Sri Lanka to 201. Kushal Perera and Rangana Herath were the only standout batters for the hosts, scoring 55 and 49 runs respectively in the second innings.

In their second innings, India lost four wickets scoring 64 runs. Rohit Sharma and Stuart Binny then took over the charge to revive the innings. Rohit completed his half-century in 72 balls.

Binny missed out on his half century by just one run. Amit Mishra once again excelled with the bat and chipped in with a 39-run knock while Ravichandran Ashwin scored 58.

The Virat Kohli-led side were bowled out for 274, putting a target of 386 runs.

Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav toppled the Sri Lankan top order. Following the dismissal of Lahiru Thirimanne, captain Angelo Matthews stitched a 135-run stand with Kusal Perera.

Their partnership was finally broken by Ravichandran Ashwin, picked up the wicket of Kusal Perera The then Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews returned to the dressing room playing a fine knock of 110.

Sri Lanka ultimately fell 117 runs short of the target as the match concluded before tea on Day 5. Ravichandran Ashwin was named the player of the series after taking 21 wickets across three Tests.
