Kapil Dev scored one of the greatest knocks in the history of ODI cricket on this day back in 1983. Playing against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup, Kapil came up with a valiant score of 175 not out to guide India to a memorable victory.
But did you know, there is no video footage available of that incredible performance.
There was no official telecast of that game because the West Indies were playing Australia on that same day. The BBC, the solitary broadcaster back then, was also on a nationwide strike and it robbed fans of a chance to witness Kapil’s historic knock.
Coming down to bat in a tricky situation against Zimbabwe, Kapil Dev produced a scintillating performance to earn an unforgettable win for India on June 18, 1983. As cricket fans celebrate today Kapil’s masterclass against Zimbabwe, we recall that magical innings that went on to change the course of Indian cricket.
Winning the toss, Kapil Dev decided to bat first. The decision soon backfired as India endured a horrendous start to their innings. Big names like Sunil Gavaskar, Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Mohinder Amarnath returned to the dressing room without India’s total even reaching the two-digit mark.
Sandeep Patil and Yashpal Sharma were dismissed soon and India found themselves in a perilous situation, losing half of their batters at 17. With almost no chance of securing a comeback and with the prospect of a humiliating defeat looming large, in came Kapil Dev. With his gutsy batting and fearless approach, Kapil changed the whole scenario.
Kapil Dev went on to score a century and forged some crucial partnerships with the tail-enders. His epic knock ended on 175 (not out) off 138 balls. His blistering innings comprised 16 boundaries and six sixes. Kapil recorded a strike rate of 126.81 on a pitch where most Indian batters could not even reach the two-digit score.
With this, Kapil Dev succeeded in setting the record for the highest individual score in ODI cricket. He surpassed New Zealand’s Glenn Turner’s score of 171 (not out) against East Africa in 1975.
Riding on Kapil Dev’s unbeaten knock of 175, India succeeded in posting a total of 266 at the loss of eight wickets. Wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani also contributed scored 24 (not out) off 56 balls.
Zimbabwe fell short of the target by 31 runs. Kapil Dev had outstanding figures of 1/31 in his 11 overs. Madan Lal played a key role by picking up three wickets.
After that, India reached the final of the 1983 World Cup and got the better of West Indies in the summit clash by 43 runs to be crowned the champions.
