The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking for a new head coach for the Indian men’s cricket team as Rahul Dravid’s stint will come to an end after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2024. According to a report from Indian Express, Chennai Super Kings boss Stephen Fleming, who is the IPL’s longest-serving coach, had been approached for the job.
CSK CEO K.S. Viswanathan, in a recent interview, revealed that he has spoken to Fleming about the possibility.
“Actually I got a lot of calls from the Indian journalists inquiring whether he is interested in taking a job with the Indian team,” Kasi said.
“So I jokingly asked him, ‘Have you applied for the Indian coaching assignment?’ And Stephen just laughed and said, ‘Do you want me to?’,” he added.
Kasi Viswanathan also revealed that he feels Fleming may not want to take up the India Coach job.
“I know that it’s not going to be his cup of tea because he doesn’t like to be involved for nine to 10 months in a year. That’s my feeling. I have not discussed anything more with him,” he said.
The multi-format coaching role requires the coach to stay with the team for approximately ten months with the busy men’s team calendar.
Soon after the end of T20 WC, India will be travelling to Zimbabwe for a five-match T20I series starting from July 15. So, with MLC ending on July 29, and Ponting serving Washington Freedom in the USA, it will be a very difficult job for the BCCI and the former Australian skipper to come to the conclusion.
Dravid, who was given a six-month extension post the 50-over World Cup in October-November, has his contract expiring after the T20 World Cup next month. The former India captain has the option of re-applying for the post.
The Indian board invited applications for the role with a deadline of May 27.
