Shubman Gill opened up on the Vizag pitch after scoring a fighting century against England on Day 3 of a second Test match. Shubman, who was going through a lean patch in red-ball cricket, ended his 11-month-long drought to score his third Test ton which helped India post a mammoth target in front of England.
Shubman hit 104 runs off 147 balls which was laced with 11 fours and two sixes. He was the standout batter in the second innings for India as other batters failed to get going once again.
After his fighting knock, Gill talked about the pitch and said it’s easy to score runs on that.
“As the game on, it will have variable bounce as we saw today. It is not turning as much as the other pitches but it is definitely doing something. It is not easy to score runs here,” Shubman said in the post-match press conference.
Meanwhile, it was his first century while batting at the number 3 position in the Test. The 24-year-old took over the new batting position last year on the West Indies tour but he struggled to make an impact there before Sunday.
Shubman called it a satisfying knock as he stood up for the team when the openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma were dismissed in quick successions.
“Like I said, I think it was very important and very satisfying for me to be able to score runs at number three. And it felt pretty good, especially in the situation given when we lost Yashasvi and Rohit in batting, they were really good at giving us good starts at the top of the order. And I think it was important for us to get big lead and to be able to get as many runs as possible,” he added.
Shubman didn’t show any sign of aggression in his celebration as he just put his helmet off and looked to the heavens. The young batting star also talked about his mellow celebration.
“It felt good. I just thought the job was not done for the team. So that’s why it was a little mellow celebration,” he said.
