Early Life and Debut

Kapil Dev Nikhanj was born to a teakwood merchant in Chandigarh. His father Ram Lal Nilkhanj was from Sahiwal while his mother Rajkumari was born in Pakpattan, Okara. Both of these places are now in Pakistan following the partition. Dev’s family had initially moved to Fazilka after the partition before finally settling down in Chandigarh.

Kapil Dev grew up to be a menace in the 1980s. A feared pacer in his prime with shockingly good batting prowess, he went on to become the first Indian skipper to lead the Men in Blue to World Cup glory, a moment that would change the sport forever. Kapil Dev began his domestic career with a debut for Haryana back in 1975. He is also fondly called Haryana Hurricane.

His first major performance came in their 1976-77 opener against Kashmir. In that game, Dev took eight wickets while giving away just 36 runs.

International Career

Three years later he made his international debut in a Test match against Pakistan in Faisalabad. Despite putting up some underwhelming numbers, his debut was quite significant as it marked the beginning of a new era.

Not more than eight years later, Dev would lead India to their first-ever ODI World Cup crown against a star-studded West Indies squad. His contribution to his team lifting the title was so massive that he bagged the player of the tournament.

Kapil Dev stood out, particularly during moments of intense pressure. He put his charisma and flair on display after smashing 175 runs in 138 balls against Zimbabwe at the 1983 World Cup. Dev rescued the game for the Men in Blue who had already lost five wickets before his arrival to the pitch. He played a total of eight games at the tournament while scoring a total of 303 runs at an average of 60.6.

Apart from the iconic World Cup campaign Kapil Dev has also accumulated a plethora of different accolades.

  1. He boasts an impressive total of 434 wickets in 131 Test matches for the country.
  2. His only Test century came in 1988 against the West Indies. In a winning effort, Dev scored 109 runs in 124 balls. His innings included 18 boundaries.
  3. Dev also won the 1990-91 season of the Ranji Trophy, while scoring 141 runs and taking five wickets in the tournament’s semi-final.
  4. During his career from 1978 to 1994, Kapil Dev’s ODI strike rate of 95.07 was the second-highest in the world. Only Ian Smith sat above him at 99.43.
  5. He finally decided to hang up his boots in 1994, putting an end to a 16-year-long career.
